Starting with twenty beds, Kumudini Hospital now has seven hundred and fifty beds. Undoubtedly the largest privately built hospital in Bangladesh and that too in a village! People in rural Bangladesh had never received such opportunity and service. This large hospital was, therefore, something quite out of the ordinary to the villagers.
People desiring hospital services first visit the Outdoor department. Of course, in case of emergency there is a separate arrangement. Patients coming to the Outdoor department are given a ticket and their preliminary medical history is recorded. Diagnosis and treatment begins after a doctor had seen the patient. If the doctor determines that the patient needs hospitalization then he completes the necessary paper work and the patient is admitted to the hospital. Otherwise, the doctor prepares a prescription for the patient's treatment.
The hospital has its own diagnostic laboratory with all necessary general diagnostic facilities. In addition to diagnostic services this Laboratory has - on a rather limited scale - research and training facilities.
Besides the general facilities under the roof of the Hospital, the Hospital has also a Village Outreach Program where our doctors and nurses are periodically visiting the nearby villages and training the common people on midwifery, family planning, breast feeding, sanitation, antenatal and all general health awareness.
Kumudini hospital provides treatment for almost all types of diseases. Patients come here from all over Bangladesh . The principal attraction is naturally free hospital service of such standard is not available anywhere else in the country. There are charitable dispensaries elsewhere in Bangladesh , but it will be hard to find out any hospital which provides service of the standard that Kumudini Hospital provides even in the urban areas. Of course, the commercially operated medical facilities fall in a separate class and, therefore, not comparable from a service point of view.
Well managed center to provide pre- natal check-up for pregnant mothers, nutrition monitoring and child care for 0-5 years old children, treatment of diarrhoeal diseases/treatment of female diseases, tuberculosis etc. Kumudini Hospital provides permanent birth control facility for willing recipients. In addition to vasectomy and tubectomy a few other non-permanent birth control measures are also provided. TBAs are given training on how to motivate fertile couples to accept family planning measures.Starting from the inception the Hospital used to provide complete free service. But from 1993 the Trust started a Patient's Participation Program for which the patients are to pay just for their medication. For outdoor the patients have to buy a Card worth of Taka 5.00 only which is valid for 6 months and within this time the patients can utilise all sorts of outdoor facilities with this card. There is nothing that the patients have to pay against bed charge or 3 times meal or any other services provided to them except for medicine.
